Call for Submissions: Amber Road Trekking Cabins

The Amber Road trekking path is planned to allow long-distance hikers to traverse the country, reaching from the Latvia-Lithuania border to the Latvia-Estonia border. Receiving its name from the shiny specimens that wash up on the beaches to this day, the total length of the trekking path would be 530 km, and it would be included as part of one of the European long-distance paths, a network of 12 paths designated by the European Ramblers Association. Path E9 is a hiking trail that follows the coastline, branching out from the Baltics to include countries like Germany, Belgium, France, Portugal, and Spain to name a few.

Call for Proposals: HOLEŠOVICE–KARLÍN FOOTBRIDGE

The Footbridge Holešovice - Karlín International Design Competition should bring an architectural and structural design proposal for a pedestrian bridge across the Vltava River. This bridge will connect the riverbanks of Karlín, Holešovice and the Štvanice Island. Up to this day the Prague districts Karlín and Holešovice suffer from the lack of good pedestrian and cycling connection.

Open Call for a Straw Bale House of the Associations in Caino (Brescia, Italy)

The competition topic is the preliminary design of a 40 sm one-floor building, located in Caino (Brescia), an Italian municipality, The building will consist in a single multifunctional area available to different associations to carry out conferences, meetings and events. The building will be used periodically and in a discontinuous way, thus management costs should be minimized.
The jury will select 2 winning projects: an Italian and a foreign winner. Each winner is receiving a scholarship worth 1.500,00 € to join a three months internship in an internationally recognized architectural firm, leader in sustainable design. During the internship the winners will have the chance of developing the project until the executive phase thanks to the technical assistance of Promopaglia and the financial support of the Municipality.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government is promoting the Yangjaegogae Eco Bridge Design Competition which connects green areas that were disconnected for the Gyeongbu Expressway. The Yangjaegogae Eco Bridge Competition aims to connect green axis, as a part of the Ring of Green Phase of the 2030 Seoul Park and Green Basic Plan, also targets the preservation of wild animals and plants by obscuring animal’s roaming routes and improving citizens’ convenience by connecting with the Seoul Trails. After an evaluation of the entries, the results will be posted on the website, “Let’s Design Seoul” during this coming June and the winner will have the right of design.

BCA International BIM Competition 2017

The competition is to develop a concept design of an academic building as a redevelopment project to replace the Block D & E-Canteen Block to support the expanding educational activities in BCA Academy. The new building block should be able to host a minimum 3,000 students’ capacity with a maximum 23,500sqm Gross Floor Area (GFA) including usable space, public circulation and service area.

Call for Entries: Gateways to Chinatown

The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT), in collaboration with the Chinatown Partnership and Van Alen Institute today launched Gateways to Chinatown, an initiative seeking innovative proposals to plan, design, and construct an iconic contemporary neighborhood marker at the nexus of Manhattan’s Chinatown and the southern entrance to Little Italy’s historic Mott Street. Straddling art and architecture, symbolism and function, the new structure and public space aims to become a vibrant place of exchange at the center of one of New York City’s most dynamic and historically rich areas.
The overarching goal of Gateways to Chinatown is to provide a new landmark for Chinatown and the surrounding neighborhoods that will engender pride of place, embody cultural and social identities, and stimulate economic development. This new structure and public space will be located on a triangular traffic island in a key pedestrian area bounded by Canal Street, Baxter Street, and Walker Street, informally known as the Canal Street Triangle. Gateways to Chinatown invites design teams from a range of backgrounds to submit proposals to activate the space, honoring neighborhoods past and present while incorporating interactive technologies and enhanced green space. The team, which will be selected later this year, will have a $900,000 budget to design and implement their proposal, and will begin working with the community in early 2018.

Call for Papers Chicago Schools: Authors, Audiences and History

“Chicago Schools” is an international peer-reviewed graduate student symposium that explores the interplay between the individual and collective in the process of making history. The symposium, hosted by the IIT College of Architecture PhD Program in partnership with the Chicago Architecture Biennial, will engage with and enhance the dialogue around the Biennial theme, “Make New History,” by highlighting graduate student contributions in architecture, design, humanities, and architectural and urban history. Papers may revisit past and present Chicago Schools - from Henry van Brunt’s "School" and William James’ "Chicago School of Thought" to Sigfried Giedion’s "Chicago School of Architecture,” and beyond - as well as the emergence of new historiographic and architectural traditions within a global context.

Winning Proposal and Research to Shape the Future for West Palm Beach Florida

The Van Alen Institute and the West Palm Beach Redevelopment Agency (WPB CRA) have announced Open Shore by Ecosistema Urbano as the winner of the Shore to Core waterfront design competition. The competition invited designers, planners, and architects to envision the future of the West Palm Beach waterfront for the next 20 to 30 years, with elements like changing population, economy, and environment, in mind. Selected from over 40 international teams and two finalists, the winning Open Shore proposal will serve as a “vision board” for the city’s future.

The competition additionally announced a design runner up bu Perkins + Will and a research winner by the team of Happy City, University of Virginia, StreetPlans, and SpaceSyntax.
