From ancient commercial ports to today's multifunctional waterfronts, maritime and riverfront areas represent spaces of immense economic and social potential. Within this context, contemporary nautical complexes increasingly serve as strategic urban amenities capable of integrating diverse activities, fostering a reconnection between city and water, and revitalizing often underutilized landscapes.
The development of these projects, however, involves significant challenges. Chief among them is the environmental concern, as the installation of structures such as piers, access channels, and support areas occurs in highly ecologically sensitive natural environments. Consequently, sustainability has become a central theme in contemporary nautical architecture. International competitions have played an important role in discussing new approaches to these interventions, such as the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Architecture Awards, which brings together projects aimed at creating climate-resilient marinas committed to reducing environmental impacts.
