Lunawood is a pioneer in decorative wood solutions, with 25 years of expertise in the thermal modification of wood. Their mission is to reconnect people with nature by bringing the calming essence of the forest into urban environments.
Lunawood ThermoWood® battens were applied in House Janse van Vuren, a single-family residence designed by Draw Box Design Studio and located within the Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate in Kempton Park, Johannesburg, South Africa. The project occupies a 1,200 m² rectangular site and was conceived as a contemporary family home that responds to local climatic conditions while maintaining strong visual connections to surrounding green spaces.
In this project, Luna SHP 42 × 42 battens were used to construct vertical solar screens fixed to a light steel sub-frame throughout the exterior of the villa. The ground floor plan is organized in an L-shaped configuration that maximizes northern exposure along the east–west axis and enhances views toward the landscaped areas to the east.
The vertical screens function as environmental moderators, providing privacy from the street and reducing solar gain from the western façade while maintaining visual permeability. Installed untreated, the ThermoWood® battens are designed to weather naturally over time, gradually developing a grey patina that aligns with the architectural palette of concrete and stone.
Lunawood ThermoWood® was also integrated into interior applications, including wall cladding, ceilings, and balustrade elements. Within the double-height living area, vertical battens extend beyond the first-floor soffit to visually connect the ground and upper levels, reinforcing spatial continuity between shared and private zones. In circulation areas and the master suite, the wood surfaces contribute to a balanced material composition alongside stone and concrete, while supporting acoustic comfort and a consistent interior atmosphere.
