2×8 Mission: The AIA|LA Academic Outreach Committee, having established the AIA|LA AOC Scholarship Fund and awarded prizes and scholarships since the inception of 2×8 in 2002, is working aggressively this year to solidify a long-term endowment towards to recognizing and supporting future generations of emerging Architects. Winning students will take home scholarships in varying amounts. So far, 2×8 exhibitions have raised close to $100,000 in scholarship funds redistributed to California design students. Remaining donations are put toward an ever-growing endowment established for future student scholarships.

National Tourist Route Trollstigen / Reiulf Ramstad Architects The project will enhance the experience of the Trollstigen plateau’s location and nature. Thoughtfulness regarding features and materials will underscore the site’s temper and character, and well-adapted, functional facilities will augment the visitor’s experience. MVRDV wins competition for Comic and Animation Museum in China

Hangzhou urban planning bureau has announced MVRDV winner of the international design competition for the China Comic and Animation Museum (CCAM) in Hangzhou, China. MVRDV won with a design referring to the speech balloon: a series of eight balloon shaped volumes create an internally complex museum experience of in total 30.000m2. Part of the project is also a series of parks on islands, a public plaza and a 13.000m2 expo centre. Construction start is envisioned for 2012, the total budget is 92 million Euro.

Back in August, we featured Henning Larsen Architects’ winning proposal in an invited competition to design the Batumi Aquarium in Georgia. Today, we are happy to announce that the Danish architects received the “Architecture of the Year” award by the 2011 International Design Awards in Los Angeles. Congratulations!

BIG, Martha Schwartz Landscape, Buro Happold, Speirs & Major, Lutzenberger & Lutzenberger, and Global Cultural Asset Management are today announced as the winning team of the international design competition for a new 27.000 m2 cultural complex in Albania, consisting of a Mosque, an Islamic Centre, and a Museum of Religious Harmony.

Marc Koehler Architects and their team have won the competition for the extension and renovation of Campus Vesalius at Hogeschool Gent. The project is part of Open Call 19, organized by the Vlaams Bouwmeester in 2010 and developed with Delva Landscape Architects, Import Export Architecture, Daidalos, STBViaene and Less is More engineering. The city of Dijon and Teletech International have chosen MVRDV to transform a disused Dijon Mustard laboratory completed in 2004 into an innovative call centre with an education centre, incubator and social program. Transformation through reuse is one of the contemporary issues in European architecture since the current crisis. Completion of the 6000m2 refurbishment is planned for 2012. Social Housing Tower Of 75 Units In Europa Square / Roldán + Berengué The tower E.I.O.5 is a project of social housing promoted by INCASOL and it is located in a new central zone known as Plaça Europa (Europa Square). The NRW-Forum Duesseldorf (Germany) invited renowned architects, designers, and artists from around the world to submit designs for container architecture. The response was overwhelming. Submissions included not only existing container buildings, but also new designs that were created specially for the exhibition. Two dozen of these designs have been reconstructed as models on a scale of 1:5 for the ‘Container Architecture’ exhibition; the highest of the models breaks through the ceiling of the museum. Over 100 designs were submitted for consideration and every one of them will be included in a frieze of pictures running around the walls of the exhibition space.
