Kindergarten Kekec / Arhitektura Jure Kotnik Kindergarten Kekec is an extension of a typical Slovene prefab kindergarten from the 1980s. Situated in one of Ljubljana’s residential areas, Kekec answers the growing demand for kindergartens. This comes as a result of Ljubljana having witnessed considerable population growth as well as legislative changes and a planned increase in building density inside the highway ring surrounding the city (read more…)
At an international symposium from 26/05/2011 till 28/05/2011 in Graz, attention turns to the question of how to shape an active role for architecture in the development of “Dense Cities“. The range of questions covers all levels of scale ranging from urban landscape and agglomeration through districts to blocks and individual buildings, covering everything from the development of new building typologies on through actual interventions in the urban setting to analyses of transformations of urban density.
The new – third Ecological Borders competition calls for a radical reimagination of the current relationship between humans and the built environment through the establishment of new architectural protocols of coexistence in the search of a new Partial-Total Ecology: “YUmentec-pharming”.

Felix Nussbaum Museum / Daniel Libeskind The Felix Nussbaum Museum is an extension to the Cultural History Museum in Osnabrück and is dedicated to the work of Felix Nussbaum, the Jewish artist born in Osnabrück in 1904. The Museum displays Nussbaum’s graphics and paintings done prior to his extermination in Auschwitz, and houses a temporary exhibition space focusing on the themes of racism and intolerance (read more…)

The municipality of Brežice in cooperation with The Chamber of Architecture and The Spatial Planning of Slovenia have invited applications for public project, open and anonymous architectural competition for the kindergarten “Mavrica“ in a small town Brežice, Slovenia. Among 64 submissions, commission assigned the 1st prize to the Ljubljana based group of architects: Breda Bizjak, Lidija Dragišić M.A., Katja Florjanc, Emir Jelkić, Ajda Vogelnik Saje. The Brooklyn-based design and fabrication studio, FLATCUT_, in conjunction with the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (“ACADIA”), are pleased to announce this year’s award-winning jurors for The ACADIA 2011 Design + Fabrication Competition. The international competition asks designers to “push the boundaries of materials, minds, and machine” by exploring emergent modes of computational design. The competition focuses on unique material combinations and new fabrication techniques in creating forms in three categories: Furniture, Lighting and Partition. Winners will get the opportunity to actually fabricate their proposals this summer at FLATCUT_’s incredible 100,000sf warehouse.
Taller 301 was awarded First Prize in the International Architecture Competition Urban Landscaping in Kyiv for Euro-2012. The project entitled Reclaiming the Shore consists of 413 hectares between the Dnieper River and the City Center, and envisions a series of interventions to be developed for the upcoming UEFA European Football Championship 2012 hosted in Kyiv, as well as a long term vision for the city. More than 35 young North East designers have registered to enter a timber hut design competition which will see the winning proposals built at Middlesbrough’s £200m RiversideOne residential development on the former site of the town’s Middlehaven Docks.

In ancient times we lived with the Wilderness, fighting against its severity and its roughness, and receiving the benefits of its fertility. The wildness of nature was directly related to our lives. In our current age, we live in cities. A city is a large, man-made environment, in which we no longer think much about the power of nature, except when we are shocked by occasional natural disasters, such as storms, floods, droughts and earthquakes. However, we still instinctively recall the lives of our ancestors, and have complex feelings of fear and yearning for life in the Wilderness.
GLOBAL Design New York University: Elsewhere Envisioned is an exhibit and lecture series comprised to showcase potent innovation processes in relation to visionary architecture, urbanism, and ecological planning. GDNYU seeks to reformat the discourse on ecological design by bringing together designers, scholars, and innovators whose work is far-reaching in outlook. By placing human rational, emotional, technological, and social needs at the center of our environmental concerns, we propose a new GLOBAL design initiative.
Mecanoo has won the international competition to design the new campus of the National University of Science and Technology (MISiS), one of the leading technical universities of Russia. The 100-acre campus will be located in a new district of Moscow, where 300,000 new residents are expected over the next 20 years.
The campus includes housing for 10,000 students and 3,000 academics, and is home to seven departments, several research institutes, a library, business center, hotel, sports park, cinema, cafes and shops. As a condition of the project’s financing by President Medvedev, construction must begin by year’s end. More images and architect’s description after the break.

Havaianas Store / Isay Weinfeld Havaianas Sandals, created in 1962, drew their inspiration from the “zori”, traditional Japanese slippers made of rice straw. A product of extremely low cost, for many years they were just rubber flip-flops, a long way from the fashion icon they are today (read more…)
Last week, we attended the AIA 2011 National Convention in New Orleans, where Graphisoft presented ArchiCAD 15, the latest version of its premium design software for architects. ArchiCAD 15 enriches architectural forms available for designers to unleash their creative minds. The new version also expands the scope of the BIM workflow to include renovation & refurbishment projects.
The evolution of forms has always walked hand-in-hand with the evolution of structures. From the simplest barrel vaults to the most sophisticated rib vaults, the architect has always aspired to combine durability, utility and beauty (Vitruvius). These very principles can be seen in the finest examples of modern architecture as well.
