The Missouri Botanical Garden presents a photographic exhibition documenting many of St. Louis’s most architecturally impressive structures. View “American City: St. Louis Architecture” on display Friday, June 10 through Sunday, Aug. 21 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily in the Garden’s Ridgway Visitor Center. The exhibit is included with Garden admission.
“American City: St. Louis Architecture” features over 70 large-scale color images by award-winner architectural photographer William Zbaren, including the iconic Linnean House conservatory and Museum Building at the Missouri Botanical Garden.
The images are from the new architectural monograph, “American City: St. Louis Architecture: Three Centuries of Classic Design,” by Zbaren and architectural writer Robert Sharoff. The book – the first new monograph on the city since the 1920s – depicts 50 of the city’s most architecturally significant structures and is available at the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Garden Gate Shop.

New Haven, CT-based, Pickard Chilton said yesterday it planned and designed ExxonMobil’s new office campus that will be developed in north Houston, Texas. More images and architect’s description after the break.
Architecture for Society of Knowledge is an international Master’s Degree Program conducted in English. It was introduced at the Faculty of Architecture at Warsaw University of Technology in 2010. The program focuses on social and cultural issues, taking advantage of new technologies. Students explore the modern ways of design, as well as innovative methods of communication and fabrication that are the foundation of the XXI century architectural practice.
Recent Project | ASK the BOX Experimental design courses are specific ASK activities. Workshop studios, team work, and individual projects focus on research aspects of architectural education.
Experimental Design 2, led by PhD Jan Slyk, from 4.04 to 15.04.2011 aimed to create and develop interactive space. A 1:1 scale installation was built to allow real-scale shaping, using spatial and programming tools.
The designed pavilion is digitally recording and interpreting the presence and movement of people, who are inside, and processes the effects to acoustics signals. The entire project was implemented with the involvement of minimum technical and financial resources, which was one of the challenges posed to the students.
We want to try a new bottom-up approach to our Architecture City Guides and we need your help. To make the City Guides much more engaging we are asking for your input on which designs should comprise our weekly list of 12. In order for this to work we will need you, our readers, to suggest a few of your favorite modern/contemporary buildings for the upcoming city guide in the comment section below. Along with your suggestions we ask that you provide a link to a Flickr image you took of the building that we can use, the address of the building, and the architect. From that we will select the top 12 most recommended buildings. Hopefully this method will help bring to our attention smaller well done projects that only locals truly know. With that in mind we do not showcase private single-family residences for obvious reasons.

Contemporaine / Perkins + Will Contemporaine is a 28-unit condominium building located on a corner lot in the River North area of urban Chicago. The building consists of an eleven-story residential tower and a four-story retail and parking base. The sculptural quality of the tower and the articulation of its functional parts work to mediate the building to the varying scales of the surrounding context (read more…)
Studio Mode/modeLab is pleased to announce the upcoming modeLab Parametric Design Workshop in New York City over the weekend of June 25/26, 2011. This workshop will engage the conceptual and technical domain of parametric design by introducing participants to systemic processes capable of registering and responding to a range of diverse ecologic criteria. Emphasis will be placed on workflows that utilize constraint-based design, associative modeling techniques, and environmental influencers to discover novel and inventive design solutions.
The planning and design guidelines in this design brief are for reference only. The designer must propose the new positioning for the new possibilities for modern art museums, define the exhibition method, and propose new space requirement, then proceed the planning and design based on the new required spaces and design guidelines.

House on the Flight of Birds / Bernardo Rodrigues The house is located in the north side of S. Michael Island in the Azores. Since the microclimate of this farmland offers frequent wind and showers, the first design strategy was to block these winds with a wall and offer diverse patios and covered courtyards to protect against rain. Paris-based Chartier-Dalix architects shared with us their winning proposal for a competition to design a primary school and sport hall in Boulogne Billancourt, a commune in the western suburbs of Paris. More images and architect’s description after the break.
All eligible entries will be incorporated into exhibit, virtual exhibit, and catalogue. The jury will then select 12 finalists to display in greater detail. This will include large-scale printed panels, 3D animations, and physical models. All exhibition material will be produced by the gallery, at no cost to participants. The challenging target of an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050, means substantial change in our energy infrastructure with electricity becoming an increasingly important part of our energy mix. In order to deliver that electricity to our homes, communities and businesses, the UK will see a significant increase in the number of pylons, together with underground cables.
Coinciding with the start of the Venice Biennale, OMA and Prada open an exhibition surveying recent collaborative works. The exhibition appears at Ca’ Corner della Regina, a former palazzo, alongside highlights from the Prada Fondazione collection. More images and information after the break.

DesignByMany is a challenge based design technology community sponsored by HP and ArchDaily. Users post challenges to the community along with their design source files. The community can then post responses with their own source files to solve the challenge. They can also comment on the challenge and interact with other designers throughout the process.
As designers we not only need to think about how we can originate buildings, we need to think about how we can use existing structures to accommodate new types of building programs. This challenge is to design a pedestrian bridge between to two existing buildings.
