The subject of the competition was to foster a creative approach to a concept of high rise buildings that made use of energy efficient components of construction and passive energy options. The program for the tower was a multi-use space defined by the Isover Multi-Comfort House, with Passive House components. The Isover Multi-Comfort House is defined by the following parameters: derives from the passive house concept (leading to bioclimatic design), is sustainable, taking into account environmental, economic and social factors, provides the best thermal comfort and related energy savings, offers excellent acoustic comfort (according to ISOVER acoustic comfort classes ) and visual comfort, indoor air quality, fire protection and safety and allows high flexibility in building design outside and inside. The site for the tower is in Greenwich Village and in the Central Business District of Lower Manhattan, NY. Each team of up to three students were to produce a design that takes account of social and economic implications of the tower, as well as considerations of the process and materials of construction.
