"SP/Amazon Connection: Climate Action" brings together environmental debates and art

From November 23 to 25, "SP/Amazon Connection: Climate Action" will host a seminar on communication, art, and climate urbanism, featuring free workshops, debates, lectures, and exhibitions at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil São Paulo (CCBB SP). To conclude the event's programming, an art installation will be on display on the exterior wall of the CCBB Annex until December 25.

Conceived by Novo Acordo Verde (NAVE) and the Fervura platform, "SP/Amazon Connection: Climate Action" strategically uses artistic expression and the occupation of urban public space as tools to amplify information. It aims to connect the general public with topics like the climate crisis and the essential solutions needed for humanity and the environment to overcome history's greatest challenge.

“We are living in a decisive climate moment globally. In a few days, government leaders, private sector representatives, and third-sector organizations from the global climate agenda will gather at COP 28 in Dubai. But how much does society actually understand about this event where its own future is decided? Thinking about this motivates us to propose a program that raises awareness about the climate agenda, facilitating access to urgent information and solutions through the emotion that art and the combination of knowledge from people of the forest, countryside, and cities provide, so they know that the future can be better,” comments Pedro Henrique de Christo, president of NAVE and co-creator of the event.

Lectures, debates, and workshops

Over three days, CCBB SP will host the *Seminar on Communication, Urban Art, and Climate Urbanism*, featuring workshops, lectures, and panel discussions led by key figures in the climate debate from various regions of the country, particularly Pará and São Paulo. The activities are free with limited capacity. Tickets can be obtained through the website and the physical box office starting November 17.

On November 23, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, the Climate Communication Workshop kicks off the seminar, featuring multi-artist and co-founder of the Fervura no Clima climate emergency news and entertainment platform Caco Galhardo, journalist, writer, and Fervura co-founder Matthew Shirts, and infographic designer and Fervura co-founder Alessandro Meiguins.

Following this, at 6:00 PM, the Climate Communication panel begins, featuring engineer and environmental influencer Aline Matulja, infographic designer Alessandro Meiguins, and Caco Galhardo, moderated by cultural producer Paula Dias. Concluding the first evening, a keynote opening at 7:00 PM will feature educator, photographer, communicator, and guardian of the Jaraguá Indigenous Territory tradition in São Paulo state, Mateus Wera; artist, cultural entrepreneur, and art educator Soberana Ziza; and Matthew Shirts.

On the second day, November 24, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, the Urban Art Workshop will be held, led by curator Baixo Ribeiro and architect and visual artist Mariana Martins. At 6:00 PM, the debate "Urban Art and Climate" begins, featuring curator, educator, and gallery owner Baixo Ribeiro, Pará's State Secretary of Culture Ursula Vidal, visual artist Mariana Martins, and André Guimarães, co-founder of Maná, the production company behind the Bois de Parintins, among other large-scale initiatives.

The educational agenda of "SP/Amazon Connection: Climate Action" concludes on Saturday, November 25. The first activity, at 10:00 AM, will be the Climate Urbanism workshop, facilitated by climate urbanist, founder of Estúdio +D, and president of NAVE Pedro Henrique de Christo, with the participation of landscape designer, musician, and president of Parque Sitiê in Vidigal (RJ) Mauro Quintanilha; architects Tainá Lopes, Júlia Veras, and Juliana Barreto; and Brazilianist Beth Morin. Starting at 4:00 PM, the Climate Urbanism Panel begins, featuring Pedro Henrique de Christo, Catherine Otondo, president of the Council for Architecture and Urbanism of São Paulo (CAU-SP), and Mauro Quintanilha.

At 5:30 PM, Eduardo Neves, a researcher, archaeologist, and grantee of National Geographic, will speak about "Ancestral Future in Practice." Scientist and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC-UN) leader Paulo Artaxo closes the seminar's programming with the lecture "Global Climate Action" at 6:30 PM.

According to Caco Galhardo, co-founder of Fervura no Clima, the fact that the event takes place in the historic center of São Paulo deserves special recognition. “Facilitating access to information on the climate agenda for anyone passing by on the street and providing opportunities for exchange with people living in various regions of the country is a way to invite society to become agents of change in the scenario we are living in.”

Nave do Clima Exhibition: SP/Amazon Connection

From November 25 to December 25, a novel intervention will take place: 16 large-format posters created by leading artists in the contemporary art scene for the exhibition SP/Amazon Connection: Climate Action will be displayed on the exterior walls of the CCBB Annex.

Curated by Baixo Ribeiro and Mariana Martins, the SP/Amazon Connection exhibition transcends language barriers and plays a key role in engaging the public on climate justice and the connection between the reality of the forest and urban and rural areas, emphasizing the importance of caring for people, the planet, democracy, and peace.

The panels reproduce works by eight artists, including Moara Negreiros (Moka), a visual artist and designer born in Acre and based in Amapá, and her namesake, Moara Tupinambá, an illustrator, communicator, and Indigenous rights activist from Pará. Also from Pará, visual artist and art director Roberta Carvalho will participate. Talita Hoffmann, a visual artist, illustrator, and graphic designer from Rio Grande do Sul, along with three São Paulo natives, completes the list: multidisciplinary artist Catharina Suleiman, visual, performance, and urban artist Erica Mizutani, and visual artist and researcher Soberana Ziza.

On the side of the Annex, drawings and cartoons by illustrators such as cartoonist Laerte, artist and cartoonist Carol Ito, artist, cartoonist, writer, screenwriter, and partner at Fervura no Clima Caco Galhardo, and illustrator and cartoonist Helô Rodrigues will be shown on a video wall. Meanwhile, in the lobby of the main CCBB SP building, a large-scale architecture and urbanism installation produced by the internationally award-winning Estúdio +D, founded by Pedro Henrique de Christo, will present projects and solutions for climate urbanism.

This program follows and continues the *São Paulo-Belém Connection* exhibition, which was held outdoors on Avenida Doca de Souza Franco in Belém during the Summit of Amazonian Presidents last August. That exhibition featured the work of the same artists now showing at CCBB SP and was seen by 1.1 million people. This new intervention coincides with the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The goal is to bring and amplify the debate to the Southeast region and the city of São Paulo, bridging this global discussion with people's daily lives.

“Culture plays an extremely important role in communicating the climate agenda to the general public. If culture doesn't embrace it, the issue won't move forward. This moment is like a rising cake, looking ahead to COP 30 in Belém in 2025, reinforcing Brazil's leading role in this discussion,” says Matthew Shirts, co-founder of the Fervura no Clima platform and co-creator of SP/Amazon Connection: Climate Action.
