Mathias Klotz and SML Arquitectos design the CCU Limache Brewery Museum

The team led by Mathias Klotz and Sebastián Mundi of the architecture firms Klotz and SML has been unanimously selected in the open call for the heritage reconversion of the former CCU Brewery in Limache, the Chilean company announced today in a press release.

This project seeks to preserve the brewing heritage represented by the iconic building founded in 1883, through a museum open to the public. 

For this competition, the jury consisted of Teodoro Fernández (Architect, UC, and 2014 National Architecture Award winner); Pablo Altikes (Architect, Universidad Central, and Doctor Cum Laude in Heritage); Francisco Diharasarri (General Manager of CCU Chile); Marisol Bravo (Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Manager at CCU); and Felipe Wielandt (CCU Limache Project Manager). 

“This project proposes a new way of viewing private heritage from a broad perspective that cares about the city and its citizens as a whole. A private company putting its built, material, and social heritage at the service of society, the city, and a specific neighborhood makes this an exemplary initiative. It showcases how other buildings or structures that are no longer productive due to obsolescence can be revitalized to hold great urban and social value,” commented Teodoro Fernández, winner of the 2014 National Architecture Award.

“This project has the potential to change how we view a city, transforming it into a hub for tourism, generating virtuous cycles of social and economic growth, and fostering a sense of identity within the community. A museum of this scale and scope can inspire and drive new initiatives. This is where the synergy between private and public actors is key, allowing this new museum to serve as a platform for future projects and cultural networks,” noted Pablo Altikes, architect from Universidad Central.

“This project, which we consider an exemplary initiative that we hope will inspire others to follow, represents an excellent and unique opportunity to showcase an important piece of Chilean industrial heritage. The proposal will utilize the factory's most open spaces to help the Limache community understand the production process and the history of CCU,” expressed architect Mathias Klotz.
