Project installs bathrooms with biodigesters in Cidade de Deus, Rio de Janeiro

Nearly 100 million Brazilians lack access to sewage collection, according to data from Trata Brasil. The Guaranys community, part of Cidade de Deus in Rio de Janeiro and home to about 450 families, is part of this statistic. The area features homes built entirely in flooded zones and open sewers. To address this issue, the community was selected for a social project that installs biodigester toilets in vulnerable areas.

Under the initiative titled Softys Contigo, activities took place on September 24 and 25. Toilets were installed in six emergency homes built by the NGO TETO. The facilities include biodigesters, systems that allow wastewater to be reused through infiltration trenches. Being completely waterproof, they prevent leaks and soil contamination, helping preserve the environment.

Developed by Softys—the parent company of brands such as Elite, Babysec, Kitchen, and Cotton, among others—the project aims to bring drinking water and basic sanitation directly to more than 14,000 people and indirectly to another 30,000 across Latin America, in partnership with the NGO TETO.

Launched earlier this year with a $6 million investment, Softys Contigo aims to provide access to clean water and sanitation for residents of informal settlements and low-income communities across Latin America. The program plans to construct 2,000 water and sanitation solutions by 2026, making hygiene and proper sanitation a reality for thousands of socially vulnerable families.

In partnership with TETO, Softys Contigo provides sanitation and drinking water solutions, rainwater harvesting systems for human consumption, and communal handwashing stations. All initiatives are implemented by local residents, TETO volunteers, and Softys employees participating in the company's corporate volunteering program. Similar actions have already been carried out in São Paulo, Goiânia, Recife, Bahia, and Paraná.
