Meet the winners of the 8th Tomie Ohtake Institute AkzoNobel Architecture Prize

The Tomie Ohtake Institute has announced the three winning projects of the 8th Tomie Ohtake Institute AkzoNobel Architecture Prize. The announcement was made via a video on the institute's social media platforms, marking the opening of the exhibition featuring the 13 selected projects of this eighth edition. A total of 178 projects were submitted from 18 Brazilian states and the Federal District, with five of them located abroad (Argentina, France, Italy, Madagascar, and Mozambique).

Since its first edition in 2014, the prize has received 1,579 submissions. Among the selected entries are projects located in Amazonas, Bahia, Ceará, Distrito Federal, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Ambovombe, Madagascar. The selection was made by a jury composed of architects Ariadne Moraes, Carlos Alberto Maciel, Cintia Lins, Diego Mauro, and Tainá de Paula. 

With support from the Consulate General of France in São Paulo, the three winners will travel to Paris, France. The partnership also produced the web series of interviews Interdisciplinarity in Architecture, created by the Tomie Ohtake Institute featuring French architects.

With this award, the Tomie Ohtake Institute and AkzoNobel continue to map contemporary architectural production, highlighting, for the eighth consecutive year, significant projects built within the current Brazilian landscape. Urban relationship, commitment to the site and sustainability, as well as design and constructive inventiveness, are the fundamental criteria guiding the prize.  

In the previous edition (2020), the three winners were George Lins and Cintia Lins (Lins Arquitetos Associados) with the Academia-Escola / Unileão project (Juazeiro do Norte/CE); Emerson Vidigal, Eron Costin, Fabio Henrique Faria, João Gabriel Rosa, and Dario Corrêa Durce (Estúdio 41 Arquitetura) with the Comandante Ferraz Antarctic Station project (King George Island, Antarctica); and Adriano Mascarenhas (Sotero Arquitetos) with the Colina do Senhor do Bonfim Urban Revitalization project (Salvador/BA).
