4 Landscape Architecture Firms in Mexico You Need to Know

It is well known that Frederick Law Olmsted, designer of Central Park in New York; André Le Nôtre, responsible for the gardens of the Palace of Versailles; and Alan Titchmarsh, among others, were pioneers of landscape architecture for their ability to break the mold of traditional design. However, Latin America has produced outstanding work that deserves recognition. Such is the case in Mexico, where Pritzker laureate Luis Barragán showed the world the richness of the country's green spaces and his mastery in designing them.

As the history of landscape architecture continues to unfold, we believe it is essential to recognize the work of contemporary firms striving to design these small oases within our cities. Here is a roundup of projects by four landscape architecture firms you should know.

Polen Diseño Vivo

The firm was founded in 2010 in Mexico City by Alejandra de la Cerda and Ana Julia Carvajal. Both share a great passion for nature and design, reflecting this through the projects they develop at Polen. Above all, they seek to create long-lasting projects that raise awareness about plants and the world around us.

They prioritize the conscious use of local and available resources as an ethical design principle, giving meaning and emotional character to spaces. Their work emphasizes an aesthetic quality faithful to the essence of the site and its natural surroundings, promoting collaboration and embracing uncertainty to foster new areas of research and implementation.

VERTEBRAL

Elias Kalach and Teddy Nanes founded VERTEBRAL in 2015. The firm emerged as a multidisciplinary workshop and space for reflection, using spatial design to foster a close relationship between daily life and its context. With this in mind, they have approached projects in industrial design, landscape design, residential, and commercial architecture. Their vision is to regenerate underutilized urban spaces, typically residential, industrial, and corporate rooftops. They view rooftops as underused spaces that have the potential to reshape urban living habits by integrating them into a natural, green, and recreational environment. At the same time, these spaces foster urban biodiversity, increase property value, and mitigate urban sprawl.

Patio

Founded in Mexico City by architects Yareni Rebollar and Agustín Hernández, PATIO approaches design from the intersection of architecture and its environment. The firm operates under the belief that the development of cities and architectural practices depends on the balance between the built and unbuilt, the natural and the artificial. In this way, they aim for their interventions to create ideal, yet understated, settings for daily life.
