Although people with disabilities represent nearly 15% of the global population, and more than half of them live in urban areas, our cities rarely meet their needs. Most are designed from the perspective of non-disabled people traveling by private transport (such as cars and motorcycles), rather than those who walk, cycle, or use public transportation.
To address this, the study Access for People with Disabilities in Urban Areas, published by ITDP and World Enabled, explores the topic through the principles of transit-oriented development (TOD). The publication focuses on prioritizing sustainable urban mobility from the perspective of people with disabilities in cities, outlining the key challenges they face, along with best practices and existing recommendations.
The study, originally released in English, now has a summarized version in Portuguese.
