Open Call: Taksim Urban Design Competition

“Istanbul Is Yours” is the main principle as the Istanbul Metropolitan
Municipality announces a series of urban design competitions for the public
spaces of the city, prioritizing a participatory approach at every stage of the
process. Public spaces must be lively, accessible, free, cheerful, peaceful and
secure places where people can breathe and form democratic and social
relationships. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality will shape the design
principles of Istanbul’s public spaces by consulting stakeholders, and listening
to the needs and views of the people of the city at events organized under the
theme “Istanbul Regains Its Public Spaces”.

In addition to these participatory works carried out for each of

Hybrid City Challenge

Metsä Wood’s Hybrid City initiative is searching for ways to make construction more sustainable while maintaining efficiency using current building methods. Improving sustainability is imperative: construction alone uses 50% of the world’s resources. However, the transition will only happen if construction companies can maintain efficiency. The world needs a Plan B.

Conventionally used materials such as concrete and steel dominate the construction industry, and construction alone uses half the world’s resources and causes 30% of all CO2 emissions. Responsible construction companies are feeling the pressure to meet the growing demand for more sustainable building. The answer to this need, without compromising

Sent from Coventry: Linocuts by Paul Catherall

With Coventry designated as the UK City of Culture for 2021, and with many of its post-war architectural masterpieces under threat of redevelopment or destruction, printmaker Paul Catherall thought this a timely chance to create a body of work that reflected on the unique beauty of his hometown.

Paul Catherall has become beloved for his linocuts of brutalist and modernist architecture that are both nostalgic and contemporary. Playing on the phrase ‘Sent to Coventry,’ this exhibition will showcase the underrated beauty of Paul’s home city and its iconic architecture that should be preserved, relating that aesthetic to views of London, where

5-star Ecologic Hotel construction - La Pointe du Bout, Martinique

AN EXEMPLARY HOTEL

For decades, the seaside activity and the privatization of the seashores have participated in the transformation of the French and international coasts by the construction of facilities inherent to these mass tourist flows. Whether fortunate or unfortunate, these constructions have often had a negative impact on their environment and the stability of the surrounding biodiversity. It is therefore essential today to reduce the environmental impact of this activity. The challenge of the competition will be to find sufficiently innovative architectural responses to limit the environmental impact of construction and allow the development of biodiversity.

The New Stone Age

This landmark exhibition at the Building Centre will explore the potential of stone to revolutionise architecture and construction in light of the current climate crisis. It may seem like an ancient building material but stone has serious sustainability credentials; with the ability to reduce a project’s embodied carbon by an incredible 90 per cent compared to typical steel or concrete frames. The New Stone Age will celebrate the sustainability, practicality and inherent beauty of the world’s oldest natural material.

The exhibition is accompanied by an experimental installation in the Store Street Crescent, in the form of a giant raised stone floor
