Text description provided by the architects. The former Assembleia da Granja occupies an entire city block in the center of Praia da Granja. It is a late-19th-century building born from the vision of those who vacationed here, and for decades, it defined the local social life. During its glory years, it hosted prominent figures from Portuguese cultural and social life, including King Carlos and Queen Amélia, Prince Luís, writers like Eça de Queirós, Camilo Castelo Branco, and Sophia de Mello Breyner, cellist Guilhermina Suggia, among many others. Ramalho Ortigão, also a frequent visitor, described Praia da Granja in 1876 as "the most glorious, the coolest, the cleanest of recreation resorts in Portugal."
