Exploring Multifaith Spaces with Eric Salitsky

In this webinar, Eric Salitsky will present his 2018 Stewardson Keefe LeBrun Travel Grant research, Exploring the Global Phenomenon of Multifaith Spaces. Most commonly found in airports, hospitals, and university campuses, multifaith spaces also exist in military bases, prisons, malls, stadiums, museums, and as stand-alone institutions. Salitsky traveled to over 50 of these spaces in New York, Boston, London, Manchester, Zurich, and Berlin to document the various ways that both architects and laypeople have attempted to solve the inherent issues involved in accommodating the prayer needs of various religions at once.

Architecture of the Arctic Circle – Amanda Aman

In this webinar, Amanda Aman, AIA, LEED AP BD+C will present her 2018 Stewardson Keefe LeBrun Travel Grant research, Fragile Fields of the Arctic Circle Periphery. The perpetual global climate shift materializes within the Arctic Circle as a reaction to the pressures of petrochemical industrial output and unsustainable human practice. Arctic environments are among the first to experience the manifestations of this shift as the Arctic is warming at twice the rate of the rest of the globe. As a result, natural systems, wildlife migrations, and patterns of habitation will be severely altered, in addition to the dependence of indigenous people groups on these for cultural preservation and physical survival.

Book Launch! Design with Life: Biotech Architecture and Resilient Cities

In the challenging context of accelerating climate dynamics, the core discipline of architectural design is evolving and embracing new forms of action. New York-based nonprofit Terreform ONE has established a distinctive design tactic that investigates projects through the regenerative use of natural materials, science, and the emergent field of socio-ecological design. This kind of design approach uses actual living matter (not abstracted imitations of nature) to create new functional elements and spaces.

The 15 Crucial Things You Will Not Learn in Architecture School

Being an Architect or Interior designer is not an easy job. It’s been long years of Hardworking which goes through days and nights. But what we expect after college to land on a great job or open our own firm or do some freelancing.

New York's Legal Landmarks

Author Robert Pigott presents a revelatory slideshow drawn from his book, "New York’s Legal Landmarks," a historical guidebook. It features courthouses past and present that were sites of sensational trials (both actual and in film), locations that figured in the nation’s constitutional history, law firms where great Americans practiced law, and the homes, schools, and final resting places of Supreme Court Justices.

Design the City at City

The Graduate Program in Urban Design is focused on creating new, equitable, beautiful, and sustainable forms and technologies for the city and urban life. Committed to both experiment and amelioration, the two-semester program focuses, each year, on a New York City site and, after a research visit, on design of a city in a demanding environment abroad. We believe trans-disciplinary designers in general and urban designers in particular are in an ideal position to positively contribute to re-envisioning a series of global urban realities in crisis. Through cultural, technological, environmental, and social engagement, we can harvest a newly found design adroitness to address the problems that render our cities less just, less plural, less safe, unproductive, and environmentally deficient. The Urban Design program seeks emergent urban narratives that can guide design through the aforementioned surplus of practices, orbiting epistemes, and technologies addressing the city.
