The Groundbreaking Ceremony for ÖBB Corporate Headquarters recently took place to mark the start of construction for a new high-rise building in Vienna. Designed by Zechner & Zechner, their proposal was selected as the winner of an EU-wide competition in 2009. The building, which is located right by Vienna Central Station, will now allow several ÖBB companies to work at the same location as part of bringing together company sites. Taking place now until October 25, the Slocum Gallery at Syracuse University School of Architecture is displaying “Investigations,” an exhibition of the work of Syracuse visiting critic Stephan Jaklitsch and Marc Gardner, Principals of the New York-based firm Jaklitsch / Gardner Architects. The exhibit includes the work and design process of the firm through sketches, models, renderings, construction drawings and photographs of six projects. The work addresses specific conditions of site, use, the psychology of experience, sustainability, techniques of construction, craft in detail, and materiality of building. Henning Larsen Architects just won the competition for a new research building for the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research in Stuttgart. The Center is one of Germany’s leading research institutions and conducts research on renewable energy. Carefully integrated into the surrounding context, the building features various heights that relate to the city and adjacent buildings. The building will create a new, distinctive entrance to Stuttgarter Engineering Park and provide an insight into the ongoing research. More images and architects’ description after the break.
The College of Architecture and Design (CoAD) at NJIT will be launching its Fall 2012 Lecture Series on October 15 with Neil Meredith’s talk on a recent project by Gehry Technologies, Burj Khalifa Office Ceiling. Featuring Fred Kent*, Alissia Melka-Teichroew, Ted Krueger, Nataly Gattegno + Jason Johnson, and William Sharples as keynote speakers throughout the series, it concludes with a lecture by Nader Tehrani. Designed by dom arquitectura, the masterplan in Huizhou, China focuses on the traditional Chinese cultural concepts and social issues. Their response was to group housing towers in two lines, with an staggered arrangement, forming a double perimeter line and leaving a large green space in the site centre. Taking place at the California College of the Arts in San Fransisco October 13th from 10am-4pm, The Missing 32%,’ features leading professionals from around the country to discuss the role of women in architecture in the 21st century. In the United States, women represent about 50% of students enrolled in architecture programs, but only 18% of licensed architects are women. Throughout the day, attendees will hear from a broad range of speakers who represent different career paths in the profession ranging from those working for large firms to those choosing to start their own practice. The primary condition for the first prize winning design of the new headquarters of Congresso Nacional dos Municípios (CNM) is the creation of a metropolitan area in line with the urban context of the city of Brasilia. Designed by Luis Eduardo Loyola and Maria Cristina Motta, the project is embodied along an axis in the form of a white metallic volume floating gently on a concrete basement. RETHINK REUSE recently announced the winning entries in their Transforming Seattle’s 520 Floating Bridge 2012 International Design Ideas Competition. With the goal of envisioning new, innovative reuse strategies, the winners successfully answer the questions: What is a floating bridge when its function is no longer needed? Each year the Architectural League presents the work of significant international figures who powerfully influence contemporary architectural practice and shape the future of the built environment. Co-sponsored by The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union, the program kicks off this year with the Alberto Kalach lecture, which will highlight his current work. Cited as one of the most versatile and prolific architectural voices in Mexico City today, Alberto Kalach co-founded the firm Taller de Arquitectura X (TAX) in 1981. Kalach’s concern for the emerging problems of his vast native city has inspired projects at a range of scales, from his minimal $5,000 houses to housing developments and urban master plans. Kalach’s most ambitious speculative plan, México Ciudad Futura, is the largest project ever conceived for Mexico City. Peter Hyatt, of Hyatt and Associates, shared with us his recently completed 53-minute documentary on the 1 Bligh Office Tower. Designed by Ingenhoven Architects, the building is the first office tower in Sydney to get the highest score in the Australian “Green Star”-standard, a “6 Star/World Leadership”-certification. Derived from view corridors and the solar orientation, the 30-storey transparent office building offers unobstructed views of the world famous Harbor Bridge of Sydney and complements the opposite Farrer Place to create one of downtown Sydney’s most attractive urban spaces.

The awards honor the highest recognition of works that exemplify excellence in architecture, interiors, details, unbuilt, and unbuilt for emerging professionals. In the era of velocity, communications and sustainable development, the systems of mobility assume an increasing role as the backbone to the harmonic and democratic growth of territories. As part of the program of the Italian Pavilion at the 13th International Architecture Exhibition, the Green Boulevards International Competition wishes to contribute to the development of concrete ideas-projects for the use of technologies focused on the production of renewable energy in areas related or in proximity to infrastructures. The design and cultural challenge proposed to participants is that of utilizing networks of mobility – with their berms, trenches, intersections, viaducts, tunnels, setback areas, leftover spaces, and spaces of rest and maintenance – to create new forms of land art or environmental art at the service of energy production that, without interfering with the normal and safe operation of these same infrastructures, are able to generate energy and thus economic resources, to be re-invested in the future development of the community. Held at the National Museum on Monday, September 17, the Ministry of Information and Culture and the US Embassy in Kabul announced the winners of their International Architectural Ideas Competition for the National Museum of Afghanistan. The Jury’s decision for the winning design submissions is based on the clarity of the architectural concept that responds effectively to the programmatic, functional, technical, economic and security requirements in the brief, and the architectural quality of the proposed design as a whole. This decision ultimately recognizes the distinguished architectural quality of the winning proposed design solution with the first prize given to AV62 Arquitectos. Taking place at the Museum of Finnish Architecture October 10-November 25, the Norwegian architecture, landscape architecture and interior design office, Snøhetta, is showcasing their firm and its work in videos, computer animations, 3D models, photographs, drawings, and texts. Presented in eight sections, the first section looks at the practice itself and its offices in Oslo and New York. The following five are devoted to five key projects: the National September 11 Memorial Museum, the King Abdulaziz Centre for World Culture, the Ras Al-Khaimah Gateway Development, the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, all presented with accompanying scale models. The highlight of the exhibition is a touch-screen display providing fingertip access to data on 100 of Snøhetta’s projects.
