An interdisciplinary team from The University of Melbourne, Deakin University, The University of Tasmania and The Australian National University have collaborated on a new exhibition exploring the significant relationship between mass migration and the modernisation of Australia post-WWII.
The objects and stories on display emphasise the contribution of non-Anglophone migrants and refugees to the modernisation of Australia in the period post-World War II (1945-1979), when the urban and rural landscapes of the country were significantly transformed through nation-building programs.
Case studies in the exhibition include a study of migrant camps (Benalla and Greta), key industrial sites for hydro-electric power generation (Snowy Hydro), defence (Woomera, Long Range Weapons Establishment) and raw-material production (BHP Steelworks, Port Kembla), and independent small businesses and associated industry and streetscapes in Melbourne suburbs.
