International Bamboo Pavilion Design Competition

We encourage you to create the most innovative design for a pavilion to be constructed under the masterful expertise of builder Jorg Stamm during the 5-day hands-on 4th World Bamboo Workshop in Thanh Hoa province, VietNam, 16-20 September, this year.

The Objective: We seek to explore global creativity to realize a contemporary pavilion, one with global appeal, and not one of any particular culture or geography. The winning design will be in the hands of master builder Jörg Stamm and a team comprised of Peter van Lengen and Martin Mortera. On site in Thanh Tam Bamboo EcoPark, workshop participants will work under Stamm’s direction, alongside each other in teams, to construct a marvelous pavilion that will become a permanent structure within the vast EcoPark.

What exactly is a pavilion? Pavilions can be simple or complicated. They can be part structure, part art installation, part communal experience, and part practical solution to the weather. A pavilion is a flexible architectural open space that invites people to come in and spend time in it. It can be a meditative space, a social place, a dining room, an exhibition hall, a tea house, an amphitheater, a games room, something to come into to get out of the rain, or to seek shelter from the sun. The Thanh Tam Bamboo EcoPark is looking for an extraordinary pavilion to be built by people who love bamboo.
