The Center for Architecture, in collaboration with CONSTRUCTO, will present the exhibition EXTRA-ORDINARY: New Practices in Chilean Architecture, opening on Wednesday, June 22 at 5:30 pm, curated by CONSTRUCTO foundersJeannette Plaut and Marcelo Sarovic. The opening will begin with a roundtable discussion between Plaut, Sarovic and MoMA Director Glenn Lowry and will be followed by a presentation by architect Smiljan Radic.
The rise to international prominence of Alejandro Aravena through the 2016 Pritzker Prize and his curatorship of the 2016 Venice Architectural Biennale has brought attention to Chilean architects. Following the cultural blackout of the military regime in the 1970s and 80s, the recent decades have seen the revival of the local Modern movement sensibility and vocabulary of the 1960s. New programs and practices in Chile are enhanced by the emergence of globalized design tools and communication.
