BUOYANCY AND LIFT (FLOATING CITIES)
In a world of climate change, refugees, and displaced peoples in crisis, Pamphlet Architecture asks for visions on the concept of BUOYANCY AND LIFT (FLOATING CITIES). Proposed solutions will provide housing, clinics, and other community services to 1,500 - 2,000 inhabitants with incremental additions while incorporating innovative technologies.
While there were several Floating Cities proposed as visions of future architecture in the twentieth-century such as Kiyonori Kikutake’s Marine City (1958), Ron Herron of Archigram’s Walking City (1960s), Kenzō Tange’s Tokyo Bay Plan (1961), and Buckminster Fuller’s Triton City (1967), the twentieth-century adds a new urgency to this potential vision. With climate change raising the planet’s sea levels, there may be many climate refugees in the future. The new technologies of solar power, ocean tidal power, electricity storage, and solar desalination for fresh water revise the potential for new Floating Cities.
