Text description provided by the architects. Ateneo de Madrid: “La Docta Casa” (The Learned House). The Ateneo de Madrid is a private institution declared of public utility, founded in 1820 with the aim of disseminating science, the arts, and literature. Located in the center of Madrid, the complex consists of three buildings—Prado 19, Prado 21, and Santa Catalina 10—which together form a Heritage Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) under the Monument category. The original building at Prado 21 was designed by Enrique Fort and Luis de Landecho, with interiors by Arturo Mélida y Alinari. This 1884 building houses iconic spaces of recent history, such as the Library, the Auditorium, the Cacharrería, the Portrait Gallery, and Manuel Azaña’s Office.
