The Paths of Water: From Quito to Buenos Aires

Revealing the river flows of our habitats, “Los Caminos del Agua” (The Water Paths) is a water-focused exhibition that opens a debate on human impact on the territories we inhabit. Originating in Quito, Ecuador, the work by La Cabina de la Curiosidad (led by Marie Combette and Daniel Moreno Flores) was developed in collaboration with the Tomorrow’s Cities project, the El Tejar community, the Wayku Project, and the Yaku Water Museum.

With a focus on Argentina, the project was designed and built collectively with the participation of 142 students and 11 professors from the School of Architecture and Design at the University of Morón (day and night shifts of Taller Tia 1 and Tia 2) over a 38-day period from conception to completion. The team also received support from Estudio Borrachia, Monoblock, and Estudio BAAG. Offering the opportunity to discover the continental rivers mapped in this work, the exhibition opened on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, and will be on display until May 31, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the CABA campus of the University of Morón (Lima 221, Buenos Aires).

They represent a series of journeys across different scales, providing objective, compelling, and detailed information about the origin of water flows across continental geography, focusing first on Ecuador and now on Argentina.

The slow, patient, and rigorous hand-drawing of the river basins encourages a conscious assimilation of our territory's natural wealth. Through a slow-paced methodology of persistent observation and careful discovery, we internalize the paths of water through the repetitive, line-by-line act of drawing.

It is a revealing exercise that simultaneously immerses us in understanding the complexity of water and its systems. Viewing these images generates knowledge that leads us to empathize with this vital universe, which demands care and protection for both the environment and human beings.

With this water adventure, we aim to invite reflection while fostering urban, social, and environmental criticism, guiding us to collectively build a future in harmony with other natural entities—with, in, and from the Earth.

We researched, mapped, and drew the water basins of Argentina, tracing various conditions up to the Morón stream. Together, we understood and developed how to assemble all the information. We designed hanging systems using recycled wood from the workshop. Through numerous prototypes, we collectively built a method that adapts to the existing structure of the University of Morón building in Buenos Aires, which was quickly set up through collective effort.

The structural supports were built without drilling into any existing elements; they are held in place by friction and tension. Everything is secured and tightened with ropes and beams, while the joints are crafted with dowels and made rigid through the use of rubber bands. The entire process of research and exhibition design serves an educational purpose for the general public.
