Creating a playful space designed specifically for the needs of early childhood was the goal of the São Paulo municipal government when developing its first “Concept Plaza”—recently inaugurated at São Sebastião Plaza in the Ipiranga neighborhood. Early childhood, spanning from birth to age six, is a critical period for human development. Numerous studies show that experiences in early life, starting from pregnancy, directly shape adulthood.
“This phase builds the foundation upon which each individual will construct their life. Everything experienced in childhood will have a lifelong impact,” says educator Ana Lúcia Machado, an early childhood specialist.
A Plaza for Children
Developed by the Municipal Secretariat of Subprefectures, the new plaza is referred to as a “playful playground.” One of the highlights of the space, which took five months to complete, is the seamless, softer monolithic flooring installed to absorb impacts. This type of surface contains no concrete, and its rubberized feel comes from asphalt micro-surfacing.

The recreational area features tables that can double as benches, and slides that turn into climbing ramps for more adventurous children. There is also a mini climbing wall and a baby pump track (with curves and bumps), designed exclusively for toddlers to ride roller skates, bicycles, and scooters.
The design is highly colorful with organic shapes, stimulating imagination and creativity. The goal is to support children's physical and cognitive development by encouraging play and socialization.
To ensure safety, the gates feature a latch system designed to prevent children from leaving the area unaccompanied.

The plaza also includes a dedicated area for dogs and playground equipment suitable for children over six. Finally, the revitalization of São Sebastião Plaza integrated the design around the existing trees, ensuring a shaded, comfortable microclimate.
A Growing Trend
In Recife, the municipal government is also building plazas tailored for early childhood. There, in addition to physical development, the design philosophy focuses on connecting children with nature, promoting outdoor learning and sensory experiences.

The project in the capital of Pernambuco is guided by the “Guide of Principles for Remodeling Plazas for Childhood,” published by the Recife Municipal Government.
São Paulo's first park of this type is located on Avenida Presidente Tancredo Neves, at São Sebastião Plaza in Ipiranga. A second, similar park is currently under construction in the Saúde neighborhood.
