Results of the competition for a space with a pizza oven at FAU UFRJ

The Student Union of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of UFRJ (FAU UFRJ), in collaboration with the Abricó UFRJ Model Architecture and Urbanism Office and in partnership with various entities, including the National Federation of Architecture and Urbanism Students, organized the first edition of the Quick Student Ideas Competition - CRIE!. The objective was to seek proposals for a space featuring a pizza oven and barbecue grill that dialogue with the original project by Burle Marx for the Jorge Machado Moreira Building court area, promoting solutions using bioconstruction techniques and low-impact environmental materials.

Fourteen teams, comprising 35 students from FAU UFRJ and IAU USP, registered for the competition, with nine of them submitting proposals addressing the guidelines. The proposals were evaluated by architecture, urbanism, and landscape architecture professors from both FAU UFRJ and other institutions. Discover the winners below:

The proposal successfully addresses both the scale of the school and its social gatherings. The spatial distribution of the design ensures versatility in how the space is used. It features a rich repertoire of spatial solutions and successfully utilizes the rationalist grid as a starting point for spatial organization, which aligns well with the modernist logic. It effectively resolves construction and materiality aspects, demonstrating a comprehensive constructive approach that involves students in the execution process. In this regard, it shows careful consideration for the local reality of those who will build the space.

The cobogó wall featured in the project, combined with rammed earth, is a sensitive way to shield the setting from the street while creating architectural space. The cobogó is a feature found in both the Jorge Machado Moreira Building and the IPPMG, two landmarked buildings that feature landscaping by Burle Marx. The rammed earth wall feels like an appropriate homage to the way Burle Marx's panel integrates into the volumetry of Jorge Machado Moreira's design for our building.

It is a lightweight proposal that introduces voids and openings. The design is well-resolved at its intended scale, and the design proposal clearly demonstrates how modular thinking allows for future expansions of both the structure and its footprint. It features strong graphic representation, well-developed drawings, and maturity in both the proposal and the presentation of its references.

Third Place

Team:
Carolina Yuki Kina de Oliveira, 6th semester, FAU UFRJ
Cíntia Abel Bezerra, 6th semester, FAU UFRJ
Daivyd Lescaut Martins, 6th semester, FAU UFRJ
Fernando Alves da Silva, 6th semester, FAU UFRJ
Vitória Pagani de Andrade Coelho, 6th semester, FAU UFRJ

The exploration of the project through physical models and hands-on work is compelling. The design manages the requirements in a simple and compact way, demonstrating that fulfilling the program does not require a massive built footprint. The project addresses the surrounding environment well, planning paths and access points in connection with the pre-existing structure. Additionally, the inclusion of a restroom was highly appreciated, as it is a currently missing facility in the court area.

The comments on the projects were provided by the competition organizers.
