Illustrated Heritage: Preserving Chilean Architecture Through Drawing

Subscriber Access

Patrimonio Ilustrado is a Chilean digital and analog project created by Mario Rojas Torrejón (holding a degree in Cultural Heritage Conservation and serving as Director of the Cultural Heritage Corporation of Chile) alongside Fernando Imas of Estudio Brugmann (a practice dedicated to the research, conservation, documentation, and dissemination of Chilean heritage). Within this framework, Rojas developed this subtle, precise illustration project that recalls traditional architectural drawing techniques to highlight the facades of prominent architectural works in Chile.

The design process for each illustration takes about 30 days. It begins with research on the building, gathering images, studying its historical and architectural context, as well as the motivations and design principles of the original architect. In doing so, they work to recover the original polychromy, ornamentation, and forms of each property, before translating them into a technical drawing using graphite, ink, and watercolor. The results are then digitized to create a series of prints aimed at raising awareness of these buildings' presence within their cities.
