It is increasingly common to see contemporary families seeking housing options that not only meet their social, economic, and cultural conditions, but are also capable of responding to their future residential needs. At the same time, we witness the emotional, physical, and financial effort required to transform and adapt existing spaces to accommodate family changes. Consequently, designing evolutionary and adaptable housing has become one of the greatest challenges for architects today.

Transforming pre-existing buildings is a challenging, costly, and often arduous task. Even so, as the years go by, family configurations tend to change and evolve, as do their daily routines and spatial requirements, making renovations essential to keep pace with these changes. Throughout 2020, 2021, and 2022, for instance, we experienced first-hand the urgent need for domestic adaptation during the COVID-19 pandemic—whether to set up a home office during quarantine or to accommodate COVID survivors recovering from long-term health effects.
