Since 2009, World Photography Day has been celebrated every August 19, commemorating the presentation of the daguerreotype to the French Academy of Sciences. The daguerreotype was the first photographic process, a milestone invention for human history and, of course, for our own discipline. Discussing architecture through photography is, in the words of Beatriz Colomina, one of its primary means of dissemination.
Today, thanks to the abundance of accessible image-capturing tools and the social media boom, the role of the architectural photographer has evolved from previous eras, when they were nearly the exclusive communicators of the discipline. Even so, many architects have specialized in the field, dedicating themselves almost entirely to it. Yet, every eye behind a lens has its own perspective, its own way of documenting projects, and its own approach to storytelling through images. One such example is Spanish photographer, architect, and visual artist Ana Amado, whom we had the pleasure of interviewing in commemoration of this day.
Ana Amado shifted to photography after working for several years as a design architect, beginning with a purely descriptive approach by documenting projects commissioned by friends. She later pursued formal training, completing a master's degree in Madrid, which launched her professional career.
