We are living through a period of demographic transition—a shift we are all well aware of. The growth of the population over 60 has been exponential; however, it is not just this demographic increase that must be considered, but also the changing profile of this generation. After all, older adults are not what they used to be.
Traditionally, nursing homes and senior care facilities were designed to offer "peace and rest" to those who were tired and frail. Today, this definition is far removed from the reality of 21st-century adults over 60. Confining them to spaces designed exclusively for leisure breeds boredom and neglects the fundamental pillars of active aging (health, lifelong learning, participation, and security), which is currently recognized as the healthiest way to experience this stage of life.
