Castro Abierto is the architecture, landscape, and heritage festival of the city of Castro, Chiloé. The event will take place from October 19 to 23, 2022, featuring various activities such as talks and tours centered on local architecture and culture. These itineraries will visit different architectural works, islands, and neighborhoods in the area, highlighting contemporary projects like Hotel Estancia, Casa Barco, and Casa Muelle. The initiative aimed to collect and highlight the imaginaries emerging from different parts of Chile regarding the Chilote landscape, its crafts, and its traditions. The call targeted projects developed between 2018 and 2022, with a particular focus on those conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The curatorial team—composed of Teolinda Higueras, Beatriz Coeffé, Alejandra Carvajal, Jorge Inostroza, and Edward Rojas—was responsible for selecting 20 architectural projects to be part of the exhibition. Out of the selected projects, two stood out as benchmarks of quality and relevance: “Mirador del bosque muerto” in the undergraduate category and “Des-armar” in the graduation thesis category. The latter was also recognized as the grand winner of the 2021 National Graduation Thesis Project Competition (CNPT).
This unprecedented open call and archive is organized by Fundación Aldea and the Castro Abierto festival, and funded by the Los Lagos Regional Government's 7% FNDR 2022 fund. The Imaginarios Archipelágicos exhibition will be open to the public at Cecrea de Castro from October 21 to 28, and at the Regional Museum of Ancud from November 3 to 14, 2022. The exhibition will feature the School of Architecture of the Universidad Austral through the installation “Manifiesto invisible” by architects Leonardo Agurto and Cristóbal Riffo in collaboration with the students. Additionally, children from Cecrea de Castro, together with National Architecture Prize winner Edward Rojas, will debut a large-format collage inside the building known as “La ballena” (The Whale).
