Exhibition on contemporary Brazilian architecture occupies public space in Mexico City

In early September, the Brazilian Embassy in Mexico launched the exhibition Una nueva arquitectura brasileña, curated by the Institute of Architects of Brazil (IAB) and featuring photography by Joana França. The exhibition is held entirely in a public space on Avenida Paseo de la Reforma, one of Mexico City's most prominent thoroughfares. Approximately one million people are expected to pass by the site during the exhibition run.

The goal of Joana França's exhibition is to present a small sample of recent Brazilian architecture and foster dialogue with contemporary Mexican design, which has emerged as an important reference for many Brazilian professionals, particularly due to its innovative, context-sensitive solutions. Comprising 40 large-format images, the exhibition showcases houses, gardens, auditoriums, and various buildings designed by contemporary Brazilian architects.

Joana França has produced exceptional photographic records of the Brazilian capital, capturing its renowned modern architecture, vast open spaces, scales, contrasts, and the inequalities of a young city that has transformed, in just a few decades, into one of the country's largest metropolitan areas driven by rapid population growth.

Her technical skill has established her, alongside photographers such as Mário Fontenelle, René Burri, Marcel Gautherot, and Thomaz Farkas, as one of the most important photographers of the modern architecture of the capital inaugurated in 1960. Moreover, it is through her lens that we can access—and thus construct a panorama of—the very best of contemporary Brazilian architecture.
