Okay, let's assume the metaverse is our only option. Let's ask some questions.
What is the metaverse? Is there only one? Is it the unstoppable lifestyle choice our society is bound to choose? Are we still in time to say no to it? Should we? Does it have more of Snow Crash, Ready Player One, The Matrix, or Black Mirror? Does it have more of SimCity, Minecraft, or Fortnite? Or is it simply the evolution of an internet based on 2D hyperlinks to one teeming with new three-dimensional experiences? Is talking about three dimensions enough to talk about space? What is digital space? What dimensions does the metaverse have? Can it end? Who decides what it is like and how it is commercialized? Who owns it?
Will it be the economic and financial systems in which we are immersed that push us, almost by obligation, to live tied to this new reality? Is this new world a way to continue consuming indiscriminately as we have done so far, attempting to sweep the consequences under the rug? Are our governing systems prepared to regulate this type of activity? Do we want them to? Will politics and ideology be necessary in there? Which ideological systems are interested in making it work? Can the metaverse be a decentralized, open, and interoperable ecosystem as some propose? Will we have borders in the metaverse? What will those walls be like? And social classes? Will this be a pivotal moment of change in our way of living and inhabiting as a society, or will it be just another subsidiary feature of our lives? Will it affect everyone, or will some be able to escape? Or is it simply about a new way of understanding social media? Will we seize the opportunity to do something right by starting from scratch? Will one hundred questions be enough?
