The Body Beyond Itself and Architecture: Hundertwasser's Five Skins

Imagining and experiencing alternative ways to understand the relationship between the human body, space, and the ideas that connect it to the world was one of the central themes that Hundertwasser brought to light. The Austrian artist and architect, born in 1928, dedicated much of his work to environmental issues, expressing his perspective through the theory of the five skins: the epidermis, clothing, the home, social identity, and the world. Due to its universality, this concept retains a contemporary relevance.

To explore the dynamic connections between individuals and their surroundings, we must first understand that the body is viewed here as an organism with fluid and permeable boundaries. These boundaries expand to form plural domains that confront new ideas about ethics and the collective responsibility they entail. Notably, personal ethics do not necessarily have to be validated by collective ones. Throughout his career, the architect creatively demonstrated how it is possible to step outside socially imposed logic to live by one's own beliefs—through nature and social contexts, or culture—without disrespecting them. He manifests this precisely through the experimental possibilities of the five skins.
