ArchDaily highlights 12 Mexican works in a special edition of WA Magazine in China

An exclusive issue dedicated to Mexican architecture is the theme of the latest edition of World Architecture (WA) magazine in China, curated by the ArchDaily team. Published by Tsinghua University since its founding in 1980, World Architecture magazine is one of the largest and most prestigious architectural publications in China.

Following a first issue on Chilean architecture in 2015 curated by ArchDaily, this time the curatorial team was composed of architects David Basulto, CEO of ArchDaily; Vanessa Vielma, Director of ArchDaily Mexico; Clara Ott, Curator of ArchDaily en Español; Mónica Arellano, Editor of ArchDaily Mexico; and Nicolás Valencia, Editorial Data & Content Manager of the company.

The issue opens with four articles introducing Mexican architecture to the Chinese audience: Zhang Li, Editor-in-Chief of WA, addresses the architectural "enigma" that Mexico represents for the Asian giant; David Basulto reflects on the influence of tradition on its contemporary architecture; Vanessa Vielma explains Mexico's history through architecture; while Nicolás Valencia speculates on "Mexican architectures" alongside Argentine architect Mariano Ferretti.

Regarding the focus of this issue, David Basulto explains:

The articles are complemented by a selection of twelve Mexican projects designed by architects such as Frida Escobedo, Alberto Kalach, and Sordo Madaleno. The curation by Clara Ott and Mónica Arellano highlights cultural centers, hotels, and schools, rather than single-family homes. Why? The team attributes this to the findings of the latest State of Mexican Architecture report, which revealed that large-scale projects are of primary interest to the Chinese audience on ArchDaily Mexico.
