Conceived by architects Vinicius Andrade and Beatriz Vanzolini, along with the team from the Arq.Futuro platform, the course “Aprendendo a viver na cidade” aims to awaken young people to the importance of understanding the city, while also discovering how to influence it. The course is delivered in a book format—which is already available in bookstores—and will be officially launched at Escola da Cidade on February 27. The course features videos and audio from the “Cidade Cidadão” series, accessible via QR Code or on the Arq.Futuro website. Teachers who wish to implement it in the classroom will have access to a digital Teacher's Guide (Caderno dos Professores) with pedagogical suggestions and activities.

The course is based on the observation that, since 2007, more than half of the world's population lives in cities; in Brazil, the population has been predominantly urban since the 1970s.  ‘Aprendendo a viver na cidade’ shows how this process occurred and what its consequences are, tracing the history of urban development and the concept of urbanism, while presenting case studies from the Brazilian reality. “Rather than just providing information, our goal is to stimulate reflection and, whenever possible, action,” says author Beatriz Vanzolini.

Each chapter of the book is divided into lessons that explain key concepts of modern urbanism, detail the challenges faced by large urban centers, and offer young people the tools to improve their quality of life. The lessons also feature projects and activities to consolidate learning, along with book and film recommendations to deepen understanding of the content. Exclusive videos and raps composed by Rafael Gomes, known as MC MMoneis, summarize the presented themes in a lighthearted and direct way.

Architect Vinicius Andrade explains that “the city is an extension of our home, and the quality of life it offers is directly related to the actions of its residents.” This is, in fact, the main focus of the book. According to Tomas Alvim, from Arq.Futuro, “the course approaches the city from the resident's perspective, establishing a relationship with the territory and promoting a critical spirit for active citizenship.”

Aprendendo a viver na cidade is a guide for exercising citizenship, a course that allows young people to take responsibility and collectively shape the environment they live in.
