Flávio de Carvalho was born in a small town in the state of Rio de Janeiro in 1889. He graduated with a degree in civil engineering from Durham University in England in 1922, the same year he returned to Brazil to settle in São Paulo, shortly after the landmark "Modern Art Week" took place.
