Brazil currently has 167,060 active, registered architects and urban planners with the Council of Architecture and Urbanism. The majority, 63.10% (105,420), are women, while 36.90% (61,640) are men (61,400). In 2018, these percentages were 62% and 38%, respectively. This predominance is expected to grow in the coming years, as the share of female students is significantly higher: 67%.
To celebrate International Women's Day 2019, CAU pays a special tribute to them, presenting the inspiring career paths of female architects and urban planners from across the country. The profiles are available at www.caubr.gov.br.
Among the featured professionals are Rio de Janeiro native Carla Juaçaba, currently one of the most prominent Brazilian architects abroad; São Paulo native Rosa Kliass, designer of large-scale landscape projects such as Anhangabaú Park (São Paulo) and Mangal das Garças (Belém); Carina Guedes from Minas Gerais, founder of “Arquitetura na Periferia” in Belo Horizonte; and the collectives “Arquitetas Invisíveis” and “Arquitetas Negras”.
