Transforming a Small House on a Lima Hillside on a Budget

Subscriber Access

An exceptional small house, right there among all the other homes dotting the hillsides of Lima. At first glance, it might seem out of place, but once we learn its history and process, it couldn't be more relevant.

Hillsides and steep slopes: vast desert expanses mostly occupied by informal settlements of temporary housing that lack basic utilities and legal land tenure. A close look at the critical situation of these precarious hillside dwellings reveals several salvageable aspects. Among them is that the chaotic collage of “what is available” in terms of materials actually holds the seeds of possibilities and design guidelines for intervention.
