
The traditional brickmaking technique is fundamentally based on molding a mixture of clay and water, placing it in a kiln, and firing it to achieve its characteristic strength. Architect Octavio Mendoza Morales decided to employ this technique to build a unique home, constructed not from individual bricks but as a single, 500-square-meter ceramic piece designed to withstand weathering.
Building a project using this construction method enables a sustainable, accessible architecture that requires no major infrastructure, since the raw building material was extracted by hand from the very ground where the project sits. Located on the outskirts of Villa de Leyva, in the department of Boyacá, Colombia, its design stands out among neighboring homes, which maintain the colonial aesthetic required for structures closer to the historic town center. Octavio Mendoza's architecture honors the region's symbolic earth—an iconic reference point long before the Spanish arrived with their imported architecture.
Official description. This technology offers numerous advantages, including the ability to use earth as an architectural resource regardless of geographical location, raising the building by hand as one would make a piece of pottery. Earth, in its malleable state, rises gradually; it seals, dries, and shapes everything a human being needs for a comfortable and functional life. By doing so, we harness nature's processes, which offer alternative ways to coexist with the environment.
