It is important to turn our attention to the many urban actors whose multidisciplinary visions, when integrated, can offer an interesting, enriched, and diverse outlook on the city.
In tribute to this diverse city of nearly ten million inhabitants, the UNESCO Office in Lima has gathered academics, historians, archaeologists, urban planners, architects, artists, and Lima enthusiasts for the inaugural UNESCO Talks event, titled “Lima, muchas miradas”.

This Friday, January 18, marks the 484th anniversary of Lima's Spanish founding. While residents take growing pride in this milestone, its vast archaeological legacy also reminds us of the dawn of civilization in this territory some 4,000 years ago. Once called the "City of the Kings," Lima is South America's only capital facing the sea, is considered the region's culinary capital, and features one of the highest densities of heritage sites on the continent.
UNESCO is the leading international organization safeguarding heritage, education, science, and culture. Through United Nations agreements such as the New Urban Agenda and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, the Peruvian state is committed to these frameworks, as well as to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Lima has two major strengths: "First, its historical depth, expressed in its tangible heritage, with over 400 huacas that speak to thousands of years of cultural development. Second, the diverse identities that shape it, enriching the urban fabric with different cultural expressions from across Peru," notes Enrique López Hurtado, Culture Sector coordinator.
With this perspective in mind, the initiative aims to build a joint agenda with collectives and the academic sector throughout the year to promote the city. The main axes of this first meeting will be urban management, architectural heritage, and sustainable urban development.
