Castro Abierto is an architecture, landscape, and heritage festival that aims to highlight local construction culture, its contemporary expressions, and the memories embedded in the urban and rural archipelago landscape of the Castro commune. This initiative is organized by Fundación Aldea and funded by the National Fondart, under its architecture festival category.
As an opportunity for encounter and recognition of the island territory among the various actors involved in its construction, this year the festival offers an extensive program that seeks to showcase the diversity of construction forms and cultural expressions coexisting in the commune. Through free access to spaces that are not typically open to the public, this year’s selection of sites aims to highlight themes such as food sovereignty, rural education, water landscapes, and both popular and contemporary architecture.
Furthermore, the program includes a variety of activities, such as an inaugural discussion at the Universidad de Lagos on Thursday, October 20, at 6:00 PM. Additionally, the exhibition of architectural projects titled Imaginarios Archipelágicos will open on Friday, October 21, at noon, followed by an afternoon of illustration with the collective Ilustra Chiloé at 4:00 PM that same day; both activities will take place at Cecrea Castro. Meanwhile, on the morning of Thursday the 20th, there will be a tour to Puchilco, on Lemuy Island, followed by a boat trip to Chelín Island.
