What will water treatment in Chile look like by 2030?

Earlier this year, we unveiled the trends that will influence urban and architectural discussions in 2019, and we discovered a broad interest among our readers in topics related to Natural Resource Management, such as water—a concept that saw an 84% increase in searches on our site during 2018.

In line with this, the Superintendencia de Servicios Sanitarios will hold a seminar this month to reflect on issues related to water treatment in Chile for the year 2030.

Since 2017, the Superintendencia de Servicios Sanitarios (SISS) has been developing a project that defines the main challenges for 2030—because while the focus in the 1990s was on coverage, wastewater treatment, and the privatization process, the focus has shifted today. Through a participatory methodology, a collective reflection process was generated with key stakeholders from the civic, public, and private sectors, all of whom interact in various ways with drinking water, sewage, and wastewater treatment services in Chile.

Desafíos 2030—an inspirational platform that seeks to disseminate innovative practices, solutions, and technologies that contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals—was divided into three stages, which generated 12 workshops and attracted over 600 participants. The first phase began in 2017 with data collection and a series of workshops that provided a clear understanding of the current state of the sanitary sector and the direction it should take.
