SP Urbanismo, in partnership with the global network C40 Cities, has launched an international competition to select urban design projects for four underutilized public spaces in the city's central region. Open to architects, urban planners, and architecture and urban design firms from Brazil and abroad, the competition aims to gather innovative proposals to transform residual, underutilized road infrastructure into seating and leisure areas that are more inviting for pedestrians and the use of non-polluting transport, such as bicycles.
The competition is part of the global "Reinventing Cities" initiative, promoted by C40, a network of major global cities committed to developing actions to combat global warming and climate change. São Paulo is the only representative from Latin America on the list of cities selected for this edition of the competition.
The municipality has identified four areas for candidates to submit preliminary studies: Mercado Kinjo Yamato / Boulevard Prestes Maia, Praça Alfredo Issa, Praça Dr. João Mendes, and Praça Clóvis Beviláqua. These sites are located at strategic points in the Historic Center and connect to other urban renewal projects already developed or currently underway by the city government for the region.
