2020 Pritzker Prize Laureates Grafton Architects on Architectural Thinking

Subscriber Access

Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, co-founders of Grafton Architects, were awarded the 2020 Pritzker Architecture Prize. Earlier this year, they also received the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Gold Medal, becoming the first pair of women to jointly receive the honor.

In their lecture at the RIBA, the architects presented several of their projects and shared their perspectives on the field. Their talk spanned disciplines such as music, psychology, and poetry—fields that guide their design thinking. In this article, we highlight inspiring excerpts from the lecture to prompt reflection on the role of architects and urban planners in contemporary society.
