Santiago, January 5, 2018 – Chilean architect M. Pilar Pinchart presents an exhibition at Galería Pan Am showcasing the inquiries that have shaped her work over the last 10 years, synthesized into a conceptual installation on high-rise housing. The exhibition opens on January 11 and will remain on view for three weeks.
The section—the concept that gives the proposal its name—is the synthesis of the architectural design process. It reveals all relevant elements and scales of a floor plan, from the city surrounding the building to the interior furniture. The exhibition is divided into two parts. The first presents an experimental study by Pinchart on the 1922 sketch that the iconic architect and artist Le Corbusier created for his Contemporary City project, an experiment that interprets Le Corbusier’s project as the section of a visionary city. This served as the starting point for the architect’s previous exhibition, #100andesfrommywindow, presented in Aarhus, Denmark, in May 2017, and now at Pan Am. It features 15 fold-out models replicating fragments of balcony facades built in Santiago, Chile, between 1940 and 2015. These models trace the evolution from the balcony to the terrace and, subsequently, to the concept of the "vertical garden," which in turn serves as the starting point for the centerpiece: a complex assembly displaying five buildings designed to be read through the information derived from their sections, specifically regarding vegetation and usage—elements that, for the architect, define the unique identity of high-rise architecture in Santiago.
