Today, FIFA announced their selection of nations for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cup™ host at the Zurich Exhibition where it was decided that in 2018, Russia will be hosting the FIFA World Cup™. In a recent competition back in September of this year, Slavko Lekic’s Sports Center in the municipality of Ulcinj, Albania takes advantage of its location with its unique position to the coastland. Lekic’s solution became an oasis in order to combine the spaciousness of the coastal beaches with the richness of the surrounding vegetation. More images and architect’s description after the break.
This competition is unique among international awards programs for honouring the client’s role in the design process. The prize recognizes the contribution of the client’s vision, openess, flexibility, and commitment to good design. After just seven editions, the Dedalo Minosse Prize for Commisioning a Building has already become one of the most important architectural awards in the world. In this moment they are working for the 8th edition that will be awarded on June 24th, 2011 in Vicenza, Italy where there will be four main prizes and other several awards according to the rules of the Prize.
When Brian Harms and Keith Bradley found a competition with such a unique premise, calling for the design of a moon stadium, they were interested in designing for an environment with which they were unfamiliar. The competition allowed them certain freedoms not typically present in an architectural studio project. This was the first time the two fifth year architecture students of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo collaborated on a design project and hope to work with each other again in the future. Henn Architekten shared with us their proposal for the international competition to design the new ‘Nano-Polis Masterplan’ in Suzhou, China where they won the first prize. The proposal was designed by HENN ARCHITEKTEN’s Design & Research Studio HENN StudioBwho drew their inspiration from both traditional Chinese urban planning and modern science for their concept on the research and development park for Nanotech. The use of innovative technologies and environmental strategies help to make their design a more comfortable place for its users while decreasing its energy consumption. ACDF* has shared with us their design for the new library at Saint-Eustache, which is north of Montréal, Canada. The library is founded on the notion of creating a contemporary project that also shares a story that reveals the historic value of its site. The project symbolizes the reconciliation between the urban form of the Saint-Eustache as it is today, and the history of the riverside site. The concept for the project further integrates fundamental ecologically responsible principles which focus on building compactness, energy economy, and the use of high quality, sustainable materials ensuring the permanence of the project. Focusing on ideas and projects that redefine a city, Zinneke Architects have shared with us their Parking in Setif project where they adapt to the historical context of the surrounding buildings. With the ability to work during the night and day, this design is a proposal to help the second largest in Algeria relieve their traffic congestion brought about by its fast-growing urban fabric. Well known for adding quality and coherence to the existing urban context of the Netherlands, Europe and the Russian Federation, Erick van Egeraat shares with us the re-positioning of the Coach house where he combines new and old elements of the museum complex. The ambitious and successful award-winning architect, MAA Christian Bay-Jorgensen, from the architectural firm, Bay Arch, shared with us this unique and sustainable building at the harbour in Boston, Massachusetts. With affiliates in Ringkobing and Copenhagen and with creativity and energy in the blood, Boston Fusion will contain apartments and offices to create a new, green design in every sense with the help of eco-friendly materials from Icopal. The goal for the design of a model arts village in Ghana, Africa was to be easily built from local materials and local labor at a low cost with a budget of $42,000-$62,000. For final year students, Mihai Dorcu,Stefan Padurariu and Vlad Burlacu, their challenge was to provide a comfortable and multi-use space for the international arts community in the rural part of the country. They would go on to achieve this by tapping into local resources for sustainable development to integrate art into architecture for a more sustainable future. Now, Ojanen Chiou shares with us their design for a Marine and Pop Music Center where they are aiming to bring the waterfront spaces of the marine port and the urban edge of the community together. The dynamic qualities of the form demonstrate not only a cultural heritage, but a look into the future of pop music cultures and activities for the city. Occupying a central parcel in the city’s newly planned business district, Goettsch Partners (GP) has been commissioned by developer Guangzhou R&F Properties Co. Ltd. to design a new 294,570-square-meter mixed-use tower in the city of Tianjin, China which is scheduled for completion in 2015 and will be among the country’s tallest at 439 meters. Their design responds not only to the programmatic needs of each function, but also to the decreasing size of the core while creating a relationship with the history of the city. The Morogoro International School, located in the southern highlands of Tanzania, serves as a model for sustainability and modular architecture for society. With the idea of having the school simultaneously serve as a community hub, Alma-nac architects believed they could achieve this best through their repeating linear form with an emphasis on environmental control strategies. Lapo Ruffi, Vanessa Giandonati, Antonio Monaci, Lorenzo Santini have shared with us their winning project for EUROPAN 10 where they aimed to create an attractive density and an urban centrality while integrating with the surrounding landscape in the city of Montreux, Switzerland. They successfully generated an uninterrupted urban pattern with multi-functional environments as they break away from the twentieth century design principles of urban planning.
Europan is a biennial competition for young emerging architects who are looking for innovative housing solutions across Europe. By incorporating social and economic variables for their designated city, their projects become a more holistic architectural experience.

With the intention of creating a gateway for the city of Ploiesti, studioBASAR’s functional and architectural rehabilitation of the Ploiesti Racetrack is a direct response to the current chaotic conditions surrounding the site. Their intervention has led them to a more functional equitation and leisure center dividing the design into three zones that each represents different atmospheres and qualities. Like many large scale projects around the country, REX’s Museum Plaza, in the city of Louisville, Kentucky, had just broken ground and had given light to many dreams for the downtown community when the nation’s financial crisis hit the city. Needless to say, financing came to a standstill and funding for the towers the city had been hoping for was no longer an option. Their current construction loan of $140.5 million, city contributions, bonds and funds already put forth by the team was not enough to proceed in their construction efforts until positive news came their way at the turn of the month.
